Juneteenth celebrations around the Twin Cities

Friday marks the holiday Juneteenth.
The holiday commemorates June 19, 1865, when news finally reached African Americans in Texas that President Abraham Lincoln had issued the Emancipation Proclamation freeing slaves living in Confederate states two years earlier.
Here is a look at celebrations that will be held around the city to celebrate Juneteenth:
City of Bells Juneteenth bell ringing:
Churches and other institutions will be celebrating Juneteenth and showing support for the black community by ringing their bells across the state. The Basilica of St. Mary's bells will ring for 10 minutes starting at 6 p.m. Friday. Central Lutheran Church will also be participating in the bell ringing.

Juneteenth Social Justice Rally:
A rally to help celebrate Juneteenth and push for social justice is planned Friday.

#BlackLivesMatter Bloomington March:
A peaceful march is planned to demand that police be held accountable for crimes according to the Facebook post.

To mark Juneteenth a march is planned Saturday night beginning at Normandale Community College in Bloomington.

Juneteenth – A celebration of freedom!
The committee of Black workers of CTUL 'Future Fighters" is putting on a Junteenth celebration of freedom. There will be food, music, art and the event will end in a march to demand for justice.

Juneteenth/George Floyd Memorial Run:
A run/walk/bike ride of 8.46 miles is planned for Friday in celebration of Juneteenth and to honor George Floyd. The start and finish will be at 38th and Chicago, the site of George Floyd's death.

Juneteenth Community Celebration:
A Juneteenth event is planned for St. Paul communities. All are welcome to come and commemorate and enjoy live music, an open mic, art, hot food and lots of love.

Where: 685 W. Minnehaha Ave. (West Minnehaha Recreation Center)
Time: 1-5 p.m.
Juneteenth Celebration – Unite and Rebuild MSP
The family-friendly event will be held Friday in the parking lot of the Target at East Lake Street and Minnehaha Avenue. The event will include musical artists, community speakers and food trucks. Attendees are encouraged to bring items from the event's food and supply drive. Those who attend are asked to wear a mask and practice social distancing when possible.

June 19th Community Celebration
Aimed at building a stronger community, the June 19th Community Celebration offers free food, assistance for those in need and a mental health tent for those experiencing trauma following the death of George Floyd.

Time: 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Juneteenth: Community Festival and Rally for Justice
This event held in North Minneapolis will include hot food from Pimento Jamaican Kitchen, a food and supply drive, live music performances and a rally in honor of George Floyd. Organizers say the event is meant to "show the love, unity, resilience and beauty of North Minneapolis."

Where: The Cub Foods parking lot on West Broadway Avenue in Minneapolis.

Juneteenth Cookout and Donation Drive
A community gathering to celebrate Juneteenth will be held outside Cup Foods in south Minneapolis, the site where George Floyd was killed. According to the event, there will be free food, an open mic and live performances

The bike ride will start at the UROC and stop for rests at the Walker Art Center and the George Floyd memorial site at 38th Street and Chicago Avenue before circling back to the UROC. Caravan Parade
Decorate your vehicles and bring the family out. The route will be East on Plymouth Ave N, right on West Lyndale Ave N, right on Olson Memorial Hwy, turn left on N Bryant Ave, right on Penn Ave, right on Plymouth Ave and it will end back on the UROC parking lot for a community prayer. Reparations Rally at Minnesota State Capitol
Black Lives Matter Minnesota, Communities United Against Police Brutality (CUAPB), Minnesota Disability Justice Network, Darnella GO GREEN and the Green Party of Minnesota is hosting a reparations rally at the State Capitol in St. Paul. "The murder of George Floyd by the Minneapolis Police Department is an economic issue. The Wealth gap between Blacks 2.9% and Whites 90% which is the result of slavery jim crow redlining and redistricting and police terror in this country must be addressed Join us as we Demand Reparations from President Donald Trump and the United States Government," the Facebook event reads.

Social Justice Rally at Brooklyn Park City Hall
Senator John Hoffman, Denise Butler, Lee Henry Jordan, candidate for Hennepin County Commissioner in District 1 De'Vonna Pittman and Cedrick Frazier are hosting a social justice rally at Brooklyn Park City Hall.

Ashes to Beauty Block Party
This party in Apple Valley will feature speakers, performances, black retail and food vendors along with music and activities for kids.

A Day of Service: Serving our Northside Community
Positive Image is hosting 'A Day of Service' in north Minneapolis. "We want our men to help serve our community a sign of unity of working together by providing food, helping distribute food items, cooking, and giving a help hand to those in need," the event reads. They are asking for over 50 volunteers that are men for the event.

Juneteenth Celebrations 2020: Bringing Diversity into Rowing
A new rowing club based in St. Paul is hosting a free learn-to-row session on Lake Phalen.

ABC's Juneteenth: A Celebration of Overcoming
ABC News will present a primetime special to commemorate Juneteenth, the holiday celebrating the end of slavery in America, and examine its symbolism among the Black community and around the nation. The special will air at 8 p.m. ET.
