Judge changes direction, will require Chauvin to pay fees related to trial
A day after Hennepin County District Judge Peter Cahill granted a motion by Derek Chauvin to waive any fees associated with the trial, Cahill denied the motion on Friday.
According to court documents, the former Minneapolis police officer convicted in the murder of George Floyd was denied In Forma Pauperis and will have to pay any fees, costs or security related to the 2021 trial. Chauvin expressed he couldn’t afford the fees due to financial issues.
In addition, Chauvin also filed an appeal in the conviction to have it stayed until he can obtain an attorney. He currently is representing himself in the case.
The former officer filed an intent to appeal with the Minnesota Court of Appeals, listing more than a dozen issues to raise on the appeal. Two of those concerns raised by Chauvin include the court’s decision to not grant him a change of venue or sequester the jury.
