Monday, investigators are looking into what sparked a fire that left one person dead in Inver Grove Heights.

Fire crews arrived at the multi-family home, on the 3800 block of Conroy Trail East, around 9 p.m. Sunday. Inver Grove Heights Fire Chief Judy Smith-Thill told 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS that by the time crews arrived, there were heavy flames and smoke.

There were early reports that a person was inside the unit on fire, but crews could not get inside until the flames were knocked down.

After the first crew was able to put out the flames, another went inside to conduct a search and found a person who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Chief Smith-Thill told 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS the cause of the fire is still under investigation by the department’s fire marshal and the state’s fire marshal investigator.

More information on the victim will be shared when it’s available.
