The stretch of Interstate 35W between Interstate 94 and Highway 62 is scheduled to be done by Sept. 10. But first, this weekend will bring one last closure in both directions from 10 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday.
Minnesota Department of Transportation crews will be removing some of the temporary barriers dividing the lanes. They will use the final weeks to finish the ramps and connect the traffic management cameras.
The project includes more than 2 miles of new road and 11 new or upgraded bridges.
Most drivers hope the wait will be worth it.
"It’s confusing sometimes. You can’t go up 94, which is a problem," said Milford Reid, a driver from Edina.
"I take 35 every day on my way into work and it takes a lot longer to get there. Having it open will be great," said Mark Iestrom from south Minneapolis.
The construction project started in August of 2017.
