A road closure in the metro is causing delays for some drivers this week.

According to the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT), construction work began Monday on a portion of Hiawatha Avenue/Highway 55 between downtown Minneapolis and Cedar Avenue.

The closure is expected to last until mid-September.

There is a detour route in place, re-routing drivers along westbound Interstate 94, southbound Interstate 35W, and eastbound Highway 62/Crosstown.

Additionally, MnDOT reports the following area ramps and bridges are now closed as a result of the work:

  • The Eighth Street bridge from downtown Minneapolis to southbound Hiawatha Avenue
  • The ramp from southbound I-35W to southbound Hiawatha Avenue
  • The ramp from eastbound I-94 to southbound Hiawatha Avenue

During the closures, traffic will be directed to follow the posted detours.

MnDOT also states Franklin Avenue under Hiawatha Avenue will be closed through May 27. Drivers can take the route along Bloomington Avenue, 24th Street and Cedar Avenue as a detour.

Crews will be working on resurfacing and bridge repairs as part of this project.
