Greenwood Fire in northern Minnesota grows to over 4,700 acres; more evacuations underway
The Greenwood Fire in northern Minnesota continues to grow and more evacuations have started.
As of Friday mid-morning, the fire had expanded to over 4,700 acres in size, according to the U.S. Forest Service.
The response to the fire was updated Friday mid-morning to include 253 fire personnel, 25 engines and three aircraft.
Friday afternoon, the Forest Service said the fire jumped over Highway 2, just north of Stony Lake. Officials then began evacuating more residents in the Sand Lake and Stony Lake areas.
Crews and equipment were entering the site from Colorado, Georgia, South Dakota and Alaska.
Thursday night, the Forest Service held a meeting at the Wolf Ridge Environmental Learning Center auditorium in Finland to update the community about the fire, according to Hubbard Broadcasting affiliate WDIO-TV.
Those living in the area are left watching and waiting.
"I usually go for a ride in the morning to see how close it is and a lot of the roads are blocked off and every night, I go for a ride to see how close it is and which way the wind is blowing," Isabella resident Dennis Duerr said.
The Greenwood Fire started Sunday near Isabella. It’s one of multiple fires currently burning in the northern portion of the state.
