Gov. Walz signs executive order declaring peacetime emergency, providing assistance to stranded motorists

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz signed an executive order on Thursday to declare a peacetime emergency and assist stranded motorists.

On Wednesday, the winter storm created heavy snowfall, strong winds and blizzard conditions across Minnesota, closing roads and threatening public safety.

Walz authorizes Minnesota National Guard to provide shelter for stranded motorists

Walz authorized the Minnesota National Guard Wednesday night to assist with the rescue of stranded motorists in Renville and Martin counties, then provide the Olivia and Fairmont armories as emergency shelters.

The executive order and the declaration of peacetime emergency are effective immediately and remain in effect until the emergency conditions caused by the winter storm subside or expire in accordance with Minnesota Statutes 2020, section 12.31, subdivision 2.
