Gophers coach Fleck: RB Potts out for rest of the season

Gophers football coach P.J. Fleck announced on Monday that running back Trey Potts (undisclosed injury) is out for the season. Fleck wouldn’t say if Potts’ medical issue is career-ending.

"It’s unfortunate what happened and really scary what happened," Fleck told reporters Monday on campus. "But he is doing very well, back in Minnesota. Do I expect him to play the rest of the year? No. I’m not going to get into the extent of his injury. I’m really thankful that we have the medical people we have."

Following the win over Purdue Oct. 2, Potts’ situation was serious enough that athletic director Mark Coyle, trainer Mike Sypniak and team physician Dr. David Jewison all stayed overnight in Indiana to be with Potts.

There was no noticeable injury for Potts in the win over Purdue. But he did go under the medical tent at one point late in the game.

In five games, Potts had 112 carries for 552 yards and six touchdowns.

With Mo Ibrahim (achilles) also lost for the year, the running game duties will go to Mar’Keise Irving, Cam Wiley, Bryce Williams and Ky Thomas.

One other note for the Gophers from Fleck Monday: Wide receiver Dylan Wright has returned to Minnesota after being excused from the Purdue game. Wright went back to Texas to mourn the death of loved one Aaron Lowe, the Utah football player killed in a shooting on Sept. 26.

The Gophers host Nebraska this Saturday.
