Girl in ‘very critical condition’ after being shot in the head in north Minneapolis

A young girl was taken to the hospital in "very critical condition" after being shot in the head Saturday night in north Minneapolis.

According to Minneapolis police spokesman John Elder, around 8:32 p.m. a red Ford was driving southbound down an alley on the 2200 block of Ilion Avenue North when a suspect shot at a home, hitting a preteen girl in the head.

Elder said the girl was playing on a trampoline with other children when she was shot. No one else was hurt.

When police arrived on the scene, they saw how seriously the child was hurt and immediately took her to North Memorial Health Hospital in a squad car.

This marks the second child to be shot in the head, in Minneapolis, this spring. On April 30, a 10-year-old boy was shot while in a car near North 34 and Morgan Avenues – no arrests have been made in that case either.

On Sunday afternoon, two mothers met so their kids could play at Cottage Park, about a block away from where the girl was shot the night before.

“My daughter, [she’s] scared to go to sleep at night sometimes because stuff like that,” Darniqua King said as her young daughter played behind her. “Anything could happen, at any moment."

“We got to think about things like that because you don’t want it to be your kids, you don’t want it to be your nieces, your nephews, your family, so why do that to somebody else?” King added

A spokesperson for Mayor Jacob Frey sent 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS the following regarding the shooting of the preteen girl:

"Mayor Frey’s heart is with the family as they pray for their daughter’s recovery. He is actively working with community and city leadership to reinvest in and rebuild community safety systems. He is also working with Northside leadership on new targeted initiatives to interrupt and crack down on the gun violence that is devastating families and our community as a whole."

As of Sunday evening, Minneapolis police have not made any arrests in the case.
