Fridley Fire Chief Mike Spencer dies unexpectedly

Fridley Fire Chief Mike Spencer unexpectedly died early Sunday morning, according to a statement from the Fridley Public Safety Department.

The public safety department said he died after he suffered a medical emergency at his home. He was 53 years old.

"It is with heavy hearts that we share the sad news of the passing of Fridley Fire Chief, Mike Spencer," the statement said. "Chief Spencer passed away unexpectedly last night. We know the amazing Fridley community will be here to support his family, friends and the Fridley Public Safety Department during this difficult time."

Spencer was promoted to fire chief in June 2019. He took over for former Fire Chief John Berg.
