Family looking for answers after hit-and-run in Minneapolis kills beloved husband, father

After meeting Muna Saifleh for just a few minutes, a few things become very clear: She loved her husband and wants justice for him and his family.

“We deserve answers,” she said. “He was an amazing guy. He was very selfless, very kind, humble. He was richer at heart.”

A hit-and-run took Idris Yussuf’s life Tuesday and left Saifleh and their 2-year-old daughter Sarah stunned and grieving.

“I just want to encourage anyone who knows anything to please come forward,” she said. “My daughter deserves to know. We all deserve to know.”

Minneapolis police say early last Monday morning, Yussuf, 31, was walking along the 600 block of Franklin Avenue toward a rental car he used as an Uber.

Family members believe he was wrapping up a five-hour shift behind the wheel.

Investigators say around 2:20 a.m., another driver hit Yussuf, first pinning him between the two cars, then launching him into the street.

“He usually used to come home around that time,” Saifleh recalls. “I believe he was heading home, but he loved tea, so I believe he stopped to get some tea before he got home."

Saifleh says her husband typically worked overnights, taking Sunday off to spend time with his family.

The family suspects this was no accident. They believe he may have gotten into an argument with the suspect driver moments before.

Saifleh calls that behavior highly unusual.

"He was never a confrontational guy,” she says. “He was a very peaceful guy, he didn’t like violence at all. He would never argue with anyone."

Yussuf was rushed to the hospital, where he died Tuesday night from severe head injuries.

Saifleh says she is grateful for the four years they had together.

She says he spent his last Sunday with Sarah at an amusement park.

“Before his life was taken, he spent the whole day with (Sarah). He took her to Urban Air,” she said. “His first priority was his daughter. He used to call her ‘my princess.’ He loved her so much.”

Yussuf, originally from Kenya, wore a beaded bracelet as he worked two jobs, for Uber and as a tax preparer, to support his family.

Now, Saifleh wears that same bracelet on her wrist.

A service was held for Yussuf on Wednesday at Garden of Eden Islamic Cemetery in Burnsville.

Minneapolis police have assigned homicide detectives to the case, but authorities have released no information about potential suspects or the other car involved.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to help the family with expenses.

The family is asking anyone with information to contact the police.

Meanwhile, they and investigators are looking for answers and hope the suspect driver will come forward.

"I just want to ask him, ‘Why?’” Saifleh saaid. “’Why did he do that? Why did he take my daughter’s father away from her?’ She doesn’t deserve to grow up without a father."
