Minneapolis Police continue to search for the shooter that wounded a 3-year-old boy Friday night in north Minneapolis.
Rochelle Hughes, the grandmother of 3-year-old Kemarrion, messaged 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS that family members are “grateful” for the Minneapolis officers who raced him to the hospital after the shooting.
Hughes said her grandson has been released from the hospital after receiving treatment for a gunshot wound to his femoral artery.
Minneapolis police officers responded to a report of a shooting Friday near 33rd and Emerson avenues.
"Those officers picked up the child, ran to their squad car, and one officer cradled the child while the other drove [with] lights and siren to North Memorial," said Minneapolis Police spokesman John Elder.
Hughes said she spoke with her grandson after the shooting, adding she would have been “broken” if he had died.
“Kemarrion is a little man, he’s full of life,” Hughes wrote. “He is a popular kid, loved by everyone.”
A security camera in the neighborhood captured the barrage of bullets from Friday night at 9:37 p.m.
“It’s unfortunate, it’s sad, it’s discouraging, it’s frustrating. You try to do the best you can to provide a safe place for yourself and family," a woman who lives on the block said. She asked that her name not be used.
At least five bullets struck a nearby home where the 3-year-old victim was playing Friday night.
The latest shooting victim makes five children shot in Minneapolis in recent months.
"I’m angry for them,” said KG Wilson, a community activist. "We’re hurting together now. It’s about justice. That’s who I am now, that’s my new mission."
Wilson’s granddaughter, 6-year-old Aniya Allen, was one of the victims, fatally shot near 36th and Penn avenues on the city’s north side.
