Drunk driving suspected after 1 dead in Eagan single-vehicle crash

A crash killed one person in Eagan, police said Monday.

The crash happened just before 2:30 a.m. on the 4400 block of Slater Road near Metcalf Drive. The 911 caller told police a car had crashed in her backyard and that it was smoking.

Police said it appeared the vehicle crashed into a tree. Two men were at the scene of the crash at the time; one was pronounced dead at the scene inside of the vehicle and the other was found a short distance away, taken to a nearby hospital and is expected to be OK.

Police say 43-year-old Michael Renlund was found dead and 28-year-old Michael Coombes was transported to Regions Hospital. Police obtained a warrant for a blood draw from Coombes as they suspected him to be under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash. He remains at the hospital receiving treatment for his injuries.

Officials are investigating.
