Crystal man charged, officers identified after shootout leaves officer and suspect injured

A Crystal man has been charged following a shootout with police Friday that left the suspect and an officer suffering from gunshot wounds.

According to the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office, 38-year-old Tyrice Laws has been charged with attempted first-degree murder of a police officer, first-degree assault of a police officer, violating an order for protection while possessing a firearm and possession of a firearm while the subject of an order for protection.

The officers involved in the shooting were identified as Andrew McComb, an 18 year veteran of the Brooklyn Park Police Department and Elisha Dwyer, a law enforcement veteran with 14 years of experience. McComb was injured in the shooting and has since been released from the hospital. Neither officer agreed to be interviewed by Bureau of Criminal Apprehension agents.

According to the complaint, on Friday, the mother of Laws’ children saw a vehicle pull into her driveway in Brooklyn Park from her surveillance camera while she and her kids were not home. Laws then called her demanding to see the children.

The woman called 911 to report that Laws was at her home, two Brooklyn Park Police officers responded to the scene in separate cars. The squad cars approached Laws’ vehicle from each side. Laws got out of his car, bent down, reached into his car then stood up. Laws proceeded to reach down again, pull out a handgun and point it at one of the officers according to the complaint.

Laws then fired the gun five or six times at the officer who was five to seven feet away. Both officers proceeded to return fire before one officer fell to the ground. Laws then retreated and fled into the backyard of the residence.

The officer that was shot was taken to the hospital where he was treated for gunshot wounds to the hip and buttock. Laws was located a short time later and treated for a gunshot wound to his left bicep.

Laws is being held at the Hennepin County Jail. His first court appearance is scheduled for Tuesday at 1:30 p.m.
