Coppertone issues recall for 5 sunscreens due to cancer risk
Coppertone is recalling five of its aerosol sunscreens after detecting the presence of benzene, a chemical that has been known to increase cancer risk.
The recall, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), applies to three types of Coppertone Pure & Simple SPF 50 Spray, Coppertone Sport Mineral SPF 50 Spray and Travel-Size Coppertone Sport Spray SPF 50.
The products were manufactured between the dates of Jan. 10 and June 15, 2021.
According to the FDA, benzene is classified as a human carcinogen. Repeated exposure can result in an increased risk of cancers, including leukemia and blood cancer of bone marrow.
Coppertone reports it has not, to date, received any alerts of adverse effects from the recalled products.
