Bloomington business owner hopes for speedy recovery after shooting

Bloomington Police say they made two arrests earlier this week in the shooting and robbery attempt at Penn Lake Roast Beef, which the victim’s family says brings them comfort.

"In this tragic situation we were able to see the impact that Kevan had on the community,” said Jackie Quach, the victim’s niece. “We’re very thankful for the support."

Kevan Tran was shot on June 16 during a robbery attempt inside his Penn Lake Roast Beef restaurant.

He remains hospitalized and is recovering from multiple surgeries.

“I thought I couldn’t make it, you know … he shot me two times … oh my God,” said Tran. “I thought I couldn’t make it."

Tran said he was in the process of closing up for the evening when the suspects approached him and shot him.

He credits a nearby worker at the liquor store in the complex for saving his life by calling 911 for help when he stumbled down the walk.

Tran had a message for his long-time customers.

“Will you tell everybody … ‘Kevan will be back,’” Tran said, noting that he plans to return to the restaurant when he’s released.

Tran’s family knows how much his restaurant means to him as he works there around the clock.

"It’s his own baby, it’s his own dream, it’s his freedom," said Quach.

Nearby businesses on Penn Avenue have been collecting money in jars at the counter.

The family’s GoFundMe page continues to grow, which they said shows the support for the man who cares about his customers.

"He’s helped people who couldn’t afford lunch, he’s like, ‘Don’t worry, I got it,’ he’ll give them extra serving sizes and when they can afford it they’ll pay him back," Quach said. "In the end of the day, he takes care of everyone."

Online court records show one of the men arrested in the case could appear before a Hennepin County Judge on Monday afternoon.
