Big changes for drivers on I-94 in St. Paul starting Sunday night

Some big changes are about to happen for commuters driving into the east metro.

Usually, Interstate 94 through St. Paul has lighter traffic over the last year, especially during the morning commute, but the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) says that won’t be the case for much longer.

"Beginning at 10 p.m. Sunday night, we’ll begin restricting the lanes on Interstate 94 both directions between St. Peter and just west of Western Avenue. We’re going to start a two-year project to resurface and repair the interstate in this area, along with some ramps, " said MnDOT spokesman Kent Barnard.

MnDOT also stated that there would be some weekend closures too.

"We are going to have some weekend closures and some of the ramps. We’ll be getting some of that information out beforehand. We don’t have specific dates right now," said Barnard.

Once the project is done in the fall of 2022, a smoother, longer-lasting road surface will be in place along I-94 and improvements to safety and mobility and upgrades to pedestrian/bicycle accessibility.

MnDOT also mentions that there will be no lane restrictions on I-94 related to this project during the Minnesota State Fair.
