BCA report: Violent crimes, property crimes up slightly in 2019

Monday, the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension released its crime report on 2019.

According to the report, violent crimes and property crimes both increased slightly in 2019 compared to 2018. However, with the exception of motor vehicle thefts, most totals in 2019 were lower than in 2017.

Additionally, the BCA reported 25 officer-involved shootings in 2019, an increase of three from the year prior, and 37 use-of-force incidents occurred, 11 of which resulted in a person dying.

Agencies reported the following race information for use-of-force incidents:

The BCA also reported an increase in reports of bias crimes, with 146 reported in 2019, up from 127 in 2018. The BCA said 49 of those were directed at Black or African American victims, more than three times the next most frequent group.
