Police: Man shot by officers in Coon Rapids
According to a release, officers were called just before 4 p.m. on Monday on a report of a man, later identified as Matthews, who "was having mental health issues" and was carrying a gun.
Officers later spotted Matthews walking on Hanson Boulevard but lost him after he walked into a residential area.
Police said officers located Matthews again and saw he had a gun in his hand. After Matthews refused to put the gun down, officers deployed beanbag rounds, according to the department.
After Matthews was hit, he continued to walk through a wooded area. A few minutes later, officers deployed a second beanbag round. According to the department, after Matthews again refused to drop the weapon, two officers fired their service weapons.
Police said Matthews was taken to Mercy Hospital by ambulance. He was later taken to Hennepin County Medical Center.
