Ancient bones found in Crow Wing River in Wadena County

Human remains uncovered this summer in Wadena County have been determined to be of ancient origin, the Wadena County Sheriff’s Office said Wednesday.

People reported that they had discovered four bones on July 31 in the Crow Wing River in Thomastown Township, the sheriff’s office said. A deputy took the bones from the river and they were eventually delivered to the Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office.

The medical examiner, working with a forensic anthropologist, came to the conclusion that one of the bones was a human mandible of ancient origin.

The mandible will undergo further archaeological evaluation before it receives a proper burial, the sheriff’s office said.
