A local organization is stepping up by offering free tutoring to students impacted by the Minneapolis teacher’s union strike.
The Minneapolis Federation of Teachers reached day 4 of striking on Friday because an agreement hasn’t been reached with the school district.
A Mother’s Love, a Minneapolis organization, is concerned that being out of school for a week will cause more students to fall behind.
“It’s all about our kids. It’s all about their education. They cannot progress in the future without it and we’re already behind,” DonEsther Morris, A Mothers Love Initiative member, said.
The organization is offering tutoring services between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. at the Cub North Side Community Center. The group is providing students with breakfast and lunch daily.
“We do their lessons as well as some art projects and some exercise and a couple other little things that we can do to keep our young people occupied during this time,” Morris said.
Morris said most of the students miss going to school and the parents are overwhelmed with a lack of childcare options.
“They’re scrambling and they’re frustrated because we just made it through this pandemic and now here we are with the teacher strike and our children are going to fall even further behind,” she said.
Morris said most students are playing catch up and getting them back on track starts with access to the classroom.
“It hurts our children. It hurts our families. It hurts our community, but more importantly it hurts the potential future that these young people have,” Morris said.
The organization plans to provide tutoring for students as long as it’s needed.
