‘A heart for people’: Friend remembers Bloomington homicide victim

The Bloomington man charged in connection to a shooting that killed his wife and harmed two others, including a 12-year-old girl, faced a judge Wednesday afternoon in Minneapolis.

According to a criminal complaint filed Tuesday, 48-year-old Jason Michael Mesich has been charged with one count of second-degree murder and two counts of second-degree attempted murder.

A brief hearing was held and a Hennepin County judge set a Sept. 30 court date for Mesich to appear.

"It’s just heartbreaking, it’s just, ‘Wow,’" said, Katie-Jo Williams a friend of Angela Mesich, who died Sunday night in the shooting. "She had such a heart for people…she was always looking for people to help."

Williams said she first met Mesich back in the late 1990s.

Williams said when she needed some extra help, Angela stepped up.

"She went out of her way to buy gifts and toys for my kids…so they would have stuff to open on Christmas," Williams said. "She loved Jesus with all of her heart, which really reflected in her heart for people."

Angela Mesich’s daughter, who is also the daughter of Jason Mesich, told 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS outside of court that her mother was a "wonderful person."

Jason Mesich told police he was arguing with his wife before the shooting at their home on 15th Avenue South in Bloomington, according to court documents.

"I’m assuming that I did shoot her," Jason Mesich said, and when asked how many times he shot his wife, he replied, "I probably emptied it…" according to court filings.

Sisters Wounded

The families of 12-year-old Makayla Saulter-Outlaw and her sister, 29-year-old Canisha Saulter, attended Wednesday’s court hearing for Jason Mesich.

The girls were helping family moved out of their home on Sunday night when they were shot.

Makayla was critically injured when shot in the head, but was able to squeeze her mother’s hand recently, according to the family.

Canisha was shot three times in her legs and will need to undergo rehabilitation for her injuries, including learning how to walk again.

At last check, Jason Mesich remains in custody on a $1 million bond.
