8-hour standoff in Duluth ends with man in custody

A standoff in Duluth’s Piedmont Heights neighborhood has ended with a 30-year-old man taken into custody, WDIO-TV reports.

According to WDIO, the standoff began at about 1 p.m. Thursday when the man barricaded himself inside his home along the 2200 block of West Nanticoke Street.

Portions of Nanticoke Street and West 26th Street were closed and officers asked the public to avoid the area, WDIO reported.

The Duluth Tactical Response Team used chemical munitions to attempt to gain the cooperation and surrender of the individual. Armored vehicles were also brought to the scene to provide support for officers by city of Superior and St. Louis County officials.

The man, who reportedly has multiple felony warrants, was ultimately taken from his home by law enforcement at the scene.

"After at least three to four hours of negotiation with the suspect, he refused to cooperate and come out so we called in our tactical response team to deal with him," Lt. Tim Jazdzewski, with the Duluth Police Department, told WDIO. "Eventually, he forced us to make entry and he was arrested inside."

Police said the man has a number of active warrants, including warrants for probation violation, criminal sexual conduct, DWI and domestic assault.
