79 arrested Tuesday night as protests continue over death of Daunte Wright

10:30 a.m. Wednesday:

Authorities say 79 people were arrested Tuesday night as protests continued following the death of Daunte Wright in Brooklyn Center.

Minnesota Operation Safety Net (OSN) said the arrests were for a range of charges, including inciting riot and unlawful assembly.

The breakdown of arrests, according to OSN, is as follows:

  • Minnesota State Patrol: 73
  • Minneapolis Police Dept.: 5
  • Hennepin Co. Sheriff’s Office: 1

Law enforcement said items like bricks and bottles were thrown at officers during protests in Brooklyn Center and the surrounding areas.

Tuesday was the third consecutive night of protests after Wright was shot and killed Sunday by a now-former police officer during a traffic stop in Brooklyn Center.

Charges against that officer could be filed as soon as Wednesday.

12 a.m. Wednesday:

Law enforcement officials with Operation Safety Net reported "many arrests" were made Tuesday night following protests in Brooklyn Center and surrounding areas.

Demonstrators have gathered in the city for the past three nights to protest the shooting death of Daunte Wright. Wright was shot and killed Sunday by a now-former police officer during a traffic stop in Brooklyn Center.

The officials with Operation Safety Net addressed the media early Wednesday morning.

Col. Matt Langer with the Minnesota State Patrol was unable to give exact numbers on arrests and citations, however, he said there was upwards of 60 people arrested that will be booked in the Hennepin County Jail.

According to Langer, officers had to issue dispersal orders at the Brooklyn Center Police Department were made "as the evening unfolded and the event devolved and became more contentious and tensions rose."

During the press conference, law enforcement officials showed items they say were thrown at officers during the protest, which included bricks, a light, cans and other items.

"Unfortunately some citizens decided to come out and throw these bricks and these other items at law enforcement, and this type of behavior is not acceptable, and we’re just quite frankly not going to tolerate it," Minnesota Department of Safety Assistant Commissioner Booker Hodges said.

11 p.m.:

Protests continue in Brooklyn Center after at 10 p.m. city-wide curfew has gone into effect.

Demonstrators have gathered in the city for the past three nights to protest the shooting death of Daunte Wright. Wright was shot and killed Sunday by a now-former police officer during a traffic stop in Brooklyn Center.

A dispersal order was issued earlier in the evening as protesters gathered around the Brooklyn Center Police Department.

A KSTP reporter at the police department says law enforcement officers have deployed chemical irritants.

It was reported that some in the crowd were setting off fireworks.

A curfew for Brooklyn Center is set to go into effect at 10 p.m.

Hundreds marched through the city of Brooklyn Center Tuesday night to protest the fatal shooting of Daunte Wright by a former officer of the city’s police department.

Demonstrations began at the Brooklyn Center Police Department, however, protesters marched to the FBI field office located in the city.

Protesters called for charges again Kim Potter, the former officer who shot and killed Wright, as well as meaningful reform from the Minnesota Legislature.

A KSTP reporter at the march said there was a large National Guard presence at the Brooklyn Park Police Department.
