5-year-old hit by vehicle, ‘gravely injured’ in St. Paul Thursday, police say

A 5-year-old boy is in critical condition after being struck by a vehicle in the Summit-University neighborhood of St. Paul, Thursday evening, police said.

At 6:30 p.m., officers went to the intersection of Marshall Avenue and Oxford Street North to investigate a report of a child struck by a vehicle, according to a spokesperson for the St. Paul Police Department. The child was in and out of consciousness and "gravely injured."

Officers provided medical aid until St. Paul fire medics arrived and took the child to Regions Hospital. The boy is in critical condition, according to police.

The driver who hit the 5-year-old didn’t show any signs of impairment, was cooperative and stayed at the scene, police said.

Traffic and Pedestrian Safety Unit investigators also responded to the incident.

This information is preliminary and an update is expected Friday.

No one is in custody, and the investigation is ongoing.
