5 Minneapolis shootings kill 2, injure 4 others in 6 hours

Two people were killed and four others were injured in five shootings over a six-hour span Tuesday night in Minneapolis.

One of the fatal shootings happened in north Minneapolis and sent a second victim to the hospital with injuries.

According to the Minneapolis Police Department, officers responded to a ShotSpotter activation and multiple reports of gunfire and screaming around 11:20 p.m. on the 2100 block of Emerson Avenue North.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found two adult male victims who had suffered apparent gunshot wounds, police said.

Both of the victims were taken to the hospital, where one was treated for non-life-threatening injuries; the other victim was later pronounced dead, police said.

The deceased victim’s identity and cause of death will be later released by the Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Minneapolis police say this is the city’s 30th homicide this year.

Four other victims were injured in as many shootings in a six-hour timeframe Tuesday across Minneapolis, police say.

The first shooting of the night injured a 30-year-old woman around 5:42 p.m. at East Phillips Park in south Minneapolis. According to the Minneapolis Park Police, she was standing on the basketball court with others when four or five rounds were fired.

Police say the victim was expected to survive.

Then at 9:53 p.m. near 32nd Street East and Second Avenue South, a man in his mid-20s was found with multiple gunshot wounds, according to the Minneapolis Police Department. He was taken to the hospital and required immediate surgery. He died the next day at the hospital.

Later, a woman in her late 20s arrived at the hospital with gunshot wounds and told police she had been shot while in a vehicle around 11 p.m. Officers were able to track the scene to 10th Street North and Hawthorne Avenue in downtown Minneapolis.

The last shooting happened around 11:42 p.m. Police say a male victim came into the Hennepin County Medical Center with at least one gunshot wound. He told police he had been shot somewhere on the north side.

Overall, more than 220 people have been shot in Minneapolis so far this year.

In a news conference, Minneapolis police spokesperson Garrett Parten urged members of the community to have a conversation with their loved ones about solving conflicts without violence.

"I would say to any community member who know and have a relationship with somebody who might be given to gun violence to use that influence and speak to them about the sanctity of life, to put the guns down, and let’s find different ways to deal with our differences," Parten said.
