2 teens charged in assault of Bloomington imam

Two juveniles have been charged in connection to the assault of an imam in Bloomington last week.

The attack on Imam Mohamed Mukhtar, the imam at Dar Al Farooq, happened late Thursday night of last week as he was walking from his home to the mosque to attend the final prayer for the day.

According to Bloomington Police, Mukhtar is still recovering from an upper body injury suffered in the assault.

A 16-year-old boy was charged with third-degree assault and a 13-year-old was also charged, according to police.

Police said, based on statements from the victim and one of the suspects, the incident doesn’t appear to be motivated by hate or bias.
