2 men from metro area face murder charges in Rochester fatal shooting

Two men from outside the Rochester area are facing second-degree murder charges following a deadly shooting early Sunday morning in downtown Rochester, according to Hubbard Broadcasting’s sister station, KAAL.

Rochester Police said at least five people were playing dice on the sidewalk near the parking ramp on 1st Avenue and 3rd Street around 2:30 a.m. Sunday when a physical fight broke out and two men began shooting.

Police said one man — identified as 28-year-old Todd Lorne Banks Jr. — died after being shot.

RPD said the other victim, a 28-year-old man from Rochester, was listed in critical condition as of Monday morning.

An on-duty police officer was near the area when the shooting happened and was able to apprehend one of the alleged shooters, 22-year-old Nautica Cox, of Robbinsdale.

The second suspect, 28-year-old Derrick Days of South Saint Paul, was arrested around 4:30 a.m. Sunday after he was seen leaving an apartment complex in southeast Rochester.

Both men are facing second-degree murder charges. RPD said the shooting was caught on surveillance video from the downtown Rochester area. Police were able to locate the gun Cox allegedly used in the shooting.

Search warrants were executed for several apartments and vehicles in the area, but police were unable to locate the gun they said Days used in the shooting.

It’s unknown where the gun may have been placed. RPD is asking the public to keep an eye out for that gun. If anyone finds it, police said it should not be touched and RPD should be contacted immediately.
