A 17-year-old boy has died from his injuries after he was shot Thursday evening three blocks from the George Floyd memorial in south Minneapolis.

According to Minneapolis Police Department spokesman John Elder, officers responded to a report of a shooting just after 6 p.m. on the 3500 block of Chicago Avenue South.

When officers arrived, they found the victim with a gunshot wound. He wasn’t breathing, and he had no pulse. First responders performed CPR and other life-saving measures, and the victim was able to regain a pulse. He was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center where he died shortly after arrival.

According to a preliminary investigation, the victim had an encounter with another person at a market on the corner of Chicago Avenue and East 35th Street. Elder said they went outside, and the suspect fired a gun at the victim before fleeing on foot.

The suspect is not in custody, but Elder said there isn’t a threat to the public because the suspect and the victim were familiar with each other and this appears to be a targeted attack.

This is the 37th homicide of 2020 in Minneapolis. At this time last year, the city had a total of 19 homicides, according to police records.

The Hennepin County Medical Examiner will release the victim’s name at a later date.
