1 dead, 1 in custody after shooting in Phillips neighborhood in Minneapolis

Authorities in Minneapolis say one person was killed Monday afternoon in a shooting in the city’s Phillips neighborhood.

Police were called just after 3:15 p.m. to the 2400 block of Elliot Avenue South on the report of a shooting. When police arrived, they found a man who was pronounced dead.

Police spokesman John Elder said a preliminary investigation found that an altercation occurred at a shopping mall in the area. The altercation moved outside, where one of the individuals involved pulled out a gun and shot the victim.

About 90 minutes after the shooting, the suspect turned himself in. Officers recovered a handgun when they met with the suspect and took him into custody.

This marks the 14th homicide in Minneapolis in 2021, according to Elder.
