Woman dies week after crash in St. Paul, other driver suspected of DWI

The St. Paul Police Department is investigating after a passenger involved in a crash last week died at the hospital Monday.

Officers said they responded to the crash at about 12:40 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 7 in the area of Lexington Parkway North and Marshall Avenue.

Two vehicles, a Honda and Jeep, were involved in the crash. The Honda was being used as an Uber and contained the driver, a 36-year-old man, and one passenger, a 31-year-old woman.

The Uber driver told police that he was driving south on Lexington Parkway when a Jeep Cherokee driving down Marshall Avenue struck the passenger side of the Honda. The Jeep then started on fire after the crash, and St. Paul firefighters came to assist.

The suspected driver of the Jeep, a 44-year-old woman, was able to exit on her own, according to the St. Paul Police Department.

Both occupants were trapped inside the Honda before responding officers freed them. The 31-year-old woman suffered significant injuries and was brought to the hospital in critical condition. She died from her injuries on Monday. The Uber driver was taken to the hospital for injuries that were serious but not life-threatening.

St. Paul police say the woman suspected of driving the Jeep was believed to be driving while intoxicated. She was arrested and booked for that charge in the Ramsey County Jail.

The Ramsey County Medical Examiner’s Office is investigating to determine the victim’s exact cause of death.

This is the 11th fatal crash in St. Paul in 2022.
