Woman charged after leading deputies on chase through Ramsey County with infant in vehicle

A St. Cloud woman has been charged after she led deputies on a high-speed chase while an infant was in her vehicle this past weekend.

Angelica Marie Henry-Schmidt, 20, faces one count each of fleeing a peace officer and endangering a child.

A criminal complaint states a Ramsey County deputy was on routine patrol at around 12:17 a.m. on Saturday and noticed a suspicious vehicle at the BP gas station on Little Canada Road East, just off of Interstate 35E. The gas station was closed and had been burglarized several times in the past year, so the deputy went to make contact with the driver — later identified as Henry-Schmidt. She quickly told the deputy she was vacuuming her vehicle and then sped away westbound on Little Canada Road before fleeing south on I-35E to westbound Highway 36 at speeds approaching 100 mph.

Deputies activated emergency lights and pursued the vehicle as it exited southbound on Hamline Avenue, driving in the northbound lanes around 80 mph, the complaint states. As the vehicle entered the intersection at Larpenteur Avenue, it bottomed out, lost control, hit a retaining wall and rolled multiple times before coming to a rest near Hamline and Idaho avenues.

The complaint states deputies then saw an infant screaming and flailing her arms and legs on the ground by the suspect’s vehicle. Deputies secured the 8-month-old girl and called medics, whose injuries appeared to be superficial.

Henry-Schmidt then resisted deputies’ attempts to restrain her and allegedly attempted to hide a baggie containing a white substance, believed to be drugs. She was eventually arrested. She and the child were then taken to a hospital for evaluation, and a search warrant allowed for a blood draw for Henry-Schmidt.

The complaint states Henry-Schmidt was on probation for multiple offenses, including third-degree drug possession, fleeing and possession of a firearm. She had a 60-month sentence stayed in the firearm case back in December.

Her preliminary bail was set at $20,000.
