Wildfire burns in BWCAW

Authorities are assessing a wildfire that started Monday afternoon in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW).

According to the U.S. Forest Service – Superior National Forest, the fire was detected northwest of Bezhik Lake within the Trout Lake unit of the BWCAW.

The fire is away from travel routes as well as lakes and rivers, the forest service said.

A flight over the fire Monday night estimated the fire was between seven and 10 acres in size, but due to the remote location and time of day, authorities determined it wasn’t safe to put firefighters on the ground.

More flights to assess the fire were planned for Tuesday morning.

Further updates are expected at a later time.
