Western Wisconsin man shot, in critical condition after pointing gun at officer

A man in northwestern Wisconsin was shot by police after he allegedly pointed a gun at an officer during a standoff Wednesday.

According to the Barron County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a call for a welfare check for a white man in Mikana, Wisconsin, after he made a threat to a person who lived nearby. Upon arrival, deputies found the man barricaded in a room with a firearm.

Law enforcement and the man talked through a standoff. However, at one point, the sheriff’s office says the man raised a firearm at a deputy, who then fired his weapon at the man. The man was wounded and was provided medical support and then air-lifted to a regional hospital.

As of Thursday morning, the man is in critical but stable condition.

The officer is on paid administrative leave as the investigation remains active. There is no other information at this time.
