Brooklyn Center police officers were called to an area near Dupont Avenue North and 67th Avenue at around 10 p.m. on Sept. 19 for a reported hit-and-run. There, officers found a man lying in the road, already dead.
Multiple witnesses reported seeing a Chevrolet Impala leave the scene, and officers were able to track the Impala to a hotel by following a fluid leak from the vehicle. Officers then got surveillance footage that showed the driver of the Impala parked at the hotel and closely examined the vehicle before returning to his room.
The criminal complaint states Edwards’ mother confirmed her son drives an Impala and police were able to talk with Edwards, who claimed he’d run over a speed bump but didn’t know it was a person until the next morning.
However, another driver at the scene told police she had pulled over near the victim and saw the Impala run over the victim. She added that the Impala then stopped by her and asked what he’d hit, and she told him twice that he’d hit a person, the complaint states. However, he responded, “No, it was a bag,” and drove off.
As of Monday morning, Edwards was not yet in police custody and was charged via warrant.
