Walz orders flags flown at half-staff to honor Red Lake Nation officer

Gov. Tim Walz has ordered flags to be flown at half staff Monday following the death of a Red Lake Nation officer.

Walz issued the order Friday for all United States and Minnesota flags at state buildings. Flags are to be flown at half staff from sunrise until sunset Monday.

Red Lake Nation officers were responding to a call at a residence Tuesday when a person fired a weapon, killing 37-year-old Officer Ryan Bialke.

Bialke was a six-year veteran of the Red Lake Police Department.

"Officer Bialke was an outstanding police officer who was respected and admired by his colleagues and the community he served, and served with dedication, honor, pride, and dignity," the proclamation issued by Walz read. "The State of Minnesota recognizes Law Enforcement Officer Bialke for his dedicated service to, and sacrifice for, his fellow citizens with its deepest gratitude, and our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and the entire community of the Red Lake Nation."

Walz said the order to fly flags at half staff in honor of Bialke can apply to individual residences, businesses and other organizations.
