Vehicle vs. train crash in Sawyer County causes man to be airlifted to hospital
A 53-year-old man was airlifted to a hospital on Wednesday after a vehicle vs. train crash in Sawyer County.
According to the Sawyer County Sheriff’s Office, at 5:03 p.m., deputies responded to a vehicle vs. train crash near the intersection of State Highway 48 and Canaday Road in the town of Weirgor.
Once deputies arrived at the scene, they learned that a 2003 Chevrolet Silverado driven by Jeffery A. Waite, 53, of Exeland, traveled east on State Highway 48 and made a right turn on Canaday Road. Exeland’s vehicle struck the side of a southbound Canadian National Railroad locomotive as the train crossed Canaday Road.
Waite was airlifted to a local hospital for medical treatment. According to deputies, the extent of his injuries is unknown at this time.
There were no reported injuries to the operator(s) of the train.
According to the sheriff’s office, alcohol is believed to be a contributing factor to the crash.
The crash is currently under investigation. More information is expected to be released at a later time.
