The votes are in: Minnesota Zoo announces names for 3 Amur tiger cubs

Wednesday, the Minnesota Zoo in Apple Valley announced the new names for its three Amur tiger cubs.

The zoo held a vote, asking members of the community to help pick a name for one of the male tiger cubs. Zoo staff and stakeholders helped select the names for the other two cubs.

More than 20,000 votes were tallied, and the zoo announced the community-selected name for one of the male cubs will be Vostok. The female cub’s name is Yana and the other male’s name is Brosno.

“When looking at naming options for animals at the Zoo, we try to choose names that are representative of the region and culture of the species’ native habitat in the wild,” a news release from the zoo read.

Zoo officials said only about 500 Amur tigers remain in the wild.
