Texas man sentenced to prison after firing at Minneapolis 3rd Precinct during 2020 riots and unrest

A man from Texas was sentenced to 52 months in prison and three years of probation for rioting after he had fired shots at the Minneapolis Third Police Precinct during the riots and civil unrest in May 2020, according to a news release from the United States Department of Justice.

Court documents state that Ivan Hunter admitted to traveling from San Antonio, Texas to Minneapolis in order to participate in the ongoing riots. Hunter had described himself as a member of the Boogaloo Bois, a loosely connected group of people who espouse violent anti-government views and believe in preparing for an impending second civil war in the United States.

The news release states that Hunter met other members of the Boogaloo Bois during the night of May 28 in Minneapolis. He then obtained an AK-47 rifle that he used to fire into the entryway of the Minneapolis Police Department’s Third Precinct. Other people, believed to be looters, were inside the precinct at the time of the shooting.

Court documents also state that Hunter made various statements on social media describing the violence he participated in while in Minneapolis after returning to Texas.

Officers from the Austin Police Department stopped a pickup truck for numerous traffic violations on June 3, 2020. Hunter was a front seat passenger, and was wearing a tactical vest containing six loaded AK-47 magazines. Multiple semi-automatic rifles were found in the back seat, along with a loaded pistol in plain view near the driver’s seat.

The news release states that federal agents became aware of Hunter’s affiliation with the Boogaloo Bois several days after the traffic stop.
