‘Take 15 to Read’ gives kids free book with COVID shot

A new initiative from M Health Fairview is taking advantage of the post-COVID-19 vaccine waiting period.

Kids who get a vaccine at one of their clinics in Midway, Brooklyn Park, Oxboro and Woodwinds can take part in "Take 15 to Read," which means they get a free book in conjunction with their shot.

Dr. Emily Borman-Shoap, an M Health Fairview pediatrician, said children are happy to step up.

"I think these kids really have been hearing about the pandemic and they know that they can do their part to protect themselves and protect their families and protect their buddies at school," she said. "They’re excited, they’re willing to do it."

Some local libraries are closed due to staffing shortages, M Health said.

“We want to keep encouraging reading, and the 15-minute post-vaccine observation period is the perfect time to do so,” Julie Nalezny, the program coordinator, said.

The free books handed out by volunteers are made possible by grants and donations through the Fairview Foundation. There is also a program from M Health called "Reach Out and Read" that gives kids a free book at their wellness checkup.
