Sylvia Fowles, nonprofit plant beets Wednesday for ‘Syl’s Final Ride’

As a WNBA champion, defensive machine and four-time Olympic gold medalist, Minnesota Lynx veteran Sylvia Fowles beats everybody.

But Wednesday afternoon, Fowles’s agenda isn’t about who she beats — it’s about beets.

Fowles will trade getting down in the paint for getting down in the dirt when she plants beets, what she claims is her favorite vegetable, at Appetite For Change in Minneapolis.

Appetite for Change aims to build health, wealth and social change through food, according to its website.

Community members and youth tend to the nonprofit’s seven farm plots in Minneapolis. The program helps kids learn to grow food, and the fresh produce is distributed to community members.

Fowles will volunteer with the nonprofit as part of her final season tour, and a bench in the garden will be dedicated in her honor.

This season has been dubbed “Syl’s Final Ride,” a campaign celebrating her decorated career. Fowles has already made other community stops along the way.

Teammates Natalie Achonwa, Kayla McBride and Rachel Banham will also volunteer Wednesday, as well as members of the Jr. Lynx Dream Team.
