Sun Country fleet service workers could follow airline’s pilots, mechanics by unionizing
Sun Country Airlines is reviewing a petition for its fleet service workers to be represented by a union, the airline told 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS over the weekend.
Sun Country says the Airline Division of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters filed the petition with the National Mediation Board, who would ultimately decide if and when a union vote would happen.
NMB is waiting for Sun Country to finish its review before it can make those decisions.
In a statement, Sun Country acknowledged its employees’ right to unionize:
“We very much value our employees and their role in serving our customers. We fully respect the right of our employees to decide whether they want to be represented by a union,” Sun Country said.
KSTP has reached out to the International Brotherhood of Teamsters for comment.
Fleet service employees could join other groups who gained new representation in the last few years, including its pilots, who Air Line Pilots Association, International said were the “lowest-paid pilots in the industry” before the Dec. 2021 deal.
Sun Country maintenance mechanics were certified with Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association this past summer and are expected to negotiate a first collective bargaining agreement for the group in the near future, according to the union.
