An officer is recovering and three people are in jail after a speeding vehicle hit the officer’s squad car overnight in St. Paul.

According to St. Paul police, officers near the intersection of Seventh Street East and Arcade Street saw a black Ford Taurus driving at a high rate of speed just after 2 a.m. Friday. Officers tried to stop the vehicle but it continued and turned off its headlights.

A few minutes later, officers saw the Taurus near Johnson Parkway and Ames Avenue and deployed stop sticks.

Police say the driver of the Taurus then accelerated and crashed head-on into an officer’s squad car.

The officer inside suffered injuries that aren’t considered to be life-threatening but the officer was taken to a hospital for treatment of unspecified injuries.

The three people in the vehicle got out and tried to run away after the crash. However, they were arrested without incident, the department says.

Police also learned the Taurus was stolen.

The case remains under investigation.
