St. Louis Park mother charged with manslaughter in death of 5-week-old baby

A St. Louis Park woman was charged with manslaughter following the death of her 5-week-old baby.

According to a release from the Hennepin County Attorney's Office, 38-year-old Mikaela Devitt was charged with second-degree manslaughter after her baby died from positional asphyxia.

The release states Devitt woke up on Dec. 28 to see her baby face down on the bed and not breathing. Her housemate then called 911 and the baby was taken to the hospital, where it later died.

Police found two prescription bottles, including a Lorazepam prescription for 10 pills to be used every six hours, in Devitt's room. That bottle was empty, according to the release.

Devitt told police that she took all 10 pills on Dec. 27 and also drank alcohol.

She's scheduled to make her first court appearance on March 5.
