St. Croix County driver dies 2 weeks after crash

A St. Croix County man has died nearly two full weeks after he crashed his vehicle following a brief pursuit by law enforcement.

The St. Croix County Sheriff’s Office said New Richmond police attempted to stop a vehicle at 3:16 a.m. on Aug. 1 because its plates didn’t match the vehicle.

When the driver fled, officers discontinued their pursuit and went back to New Richmond. Deputies found the vehicle several minutes later at County Highway T and County Highway H in Stanton after it was involved in a crash.

According to the sheriff’s office, 20-year-old Logan A. Zappa, of Deer Park, was headed north on County Highway T when he failed to stop at a stop sign and was struck by another vehicle traveling west on County Highway H.

Authorities said County Highway H doesn’t have a stop sign and that vehicle had the right of way.

Zappa was extricated from his vehicle and airlifted to a hospital with serious injuries. He died from those injuries on Aug. 14.

The other driver was treated at the scene and released.

Officials said it’s the fourth traffic fatality in St. Croix County this year.

The crash remains under investigation.
