Split Rock Lighthouse, Jeffers Petroglyphs to reopen July 15; over 300 MNHS employees furloughed or laid off

As more and more restrictions ease amid the COVID-19 pandemic, Split Rock Lighthouse and Jeffers Petroglyphs are gearing up to reopen next month.

The Minnesota Historical Society (MNHS) said Wednesday that Split Rock Lighthouse and Jeffers Petroglyphs will reopen for visitors on July 15. Birch Coulee Battlefield, Traverse des Sioux and Marine Mill outdoor trails have already reopened.

The lighthouse will be open seven days per week while Jeffers Petroglyphs will be open Thursdays through Sunday.

MNHS said it will limit the number of daily visitors at each site. Tickets can be purchased in advance online or over the phone and will go on sale July 8.

The Historical Society said decisions about remaining sites will be based on several factors, such as current state guidelines and the cost of operating the site.

In order to support the reopening of sites, MNHS said 64 staff members are being recalled. However, 139 staff members' furloughs are being extended while 176 staff members are being laid off, primarily those who work at MNHS historic sites and museums that remain closed.

MNHS said the actions will address strains on its operating budget due to the closures. Critical staff will continue to ensure the security of sites and resources.
