Sniffling and sneezing? Here are tips for dealing with allergies
Pollen season is here, and Minnesotans with allergies have likely noticed.
Pollen can cause allergy symptoms like sniffling and sneezing, but can also exacerbate other diseases and conditions, such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
There are three pollen seasons in Minnesota, according to the Minnesota Department of Health: Tree, grass and weed pollen. Currently, the state is approaching the height of tree pollen season, which lasts through mid-June, although pollen seasons are getting longer due to climate change, the department said.
MDH says it’s important for people with allergies or conditions that are exacerbated by pollen to know which pollen triggers symptoms and when the season for that pollen begins in order to be prepared.
Below are some tips MDH offers for battling allergies:
- Sign up for pollen alerts,
- Carry an asthma rescue inhaler,
- Limit outdoor activities when pollen counts are high,
- Keep windows closed during pollen season and use central air conditioning with a HEPA filter,
- Wear a hat and sunglasses to keep pollen out of your eyes and hair,
- Shower and wash your hair before bed during high pollen days,
- Change and wash clothes worn during outdoor activities,
- Wash bedding in hot, soapy water once per week,
- Limit close-up cuddle time with pets that spend a lot of time outdoors.
