Shooting, pursuit backs up traffic on I-94 near Monticello
A suspect in the shooting of a St. Cloud man led deputies and state troopers on a pursuit that significantly delayed traffic during the early evening commute.
St. Cloud Police say they responded to reports of a 20-year-old man who was shot in the 1000 block of 5th Avenue South just after 2:40 p.m.
The victim sustained a gunshot wound to his abdomen and is described as being in serious but stable condition after being taken to St. Cloud Hospital.
The suspect, who was known to the victim, fled after the shooting.
Stearns County deputies then spotted a vehicle that matched the description of the one used by the suspect eastbound on I-94.
State troopers, as well as deputies from Stearns and Wright Counties, pursued the suspect for several miles before law enforcement deployed road spikes and deflated the suspect vehicle’s tires. This stopped the pursuit just west of Mile Marker 194 near Monticello.
The occupant appeared to have suffered a fatal self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Stearns County Sheriff’s Office reports that no officers fired their weapons during the incident.
The Wright County Sheriff’s Office is conducting an investigation of the occupant’s death.
