Sheriff: Fergus Falls man drowns in Detroit Lakes
Authorities say a man drowned Wednesday night in Detroit Lakes.
The Becker County Sheriff’s Office and Detroit Lakes police responded to a report that a man had jumped off a pontoon on Big Detroit Lake and didn’t resurface.
According to the sheriff’s office, the report was made just before 5:40 p.m. and officers were on the water five minutes later. However, the victim wasn’t found until 8:48 p.m.
The sheriff’s office identified the victim as 20-year-old Jette Kriston Frandson, of Fergus Falls. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
People on the pontoon told authorities the wind started pushing the pontoon away from Frandson after he jumped into the water and he then started to struggle. The three people said they jumped in to try to help Frandson but weren’t able to save him.
The sheriff’s office says Frandson wasn’t wearing a life jacket.
His death remains under investigation.
