According to a release from the county, the commissioners agreed on the action by a unanimous vote.

The move is meant to help residents and businesses that have been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

"Imposing the full penalty for late payment of property taxes in 2020 would simply be unjust and unreasonable," County Board Chairman Felix Schmiesing said in a statement. "While we wanted a uniform statewide plan to help out our property taxpayers, we simply couldn't wait any longer for the State Legislature to act."

The county said if the Minnesota Legislature enacts a similar program "we will re-evaluate and adjust our local programs accordingly."
